The most glamorous of careers often hide the most piteous stories underneath. Lolo Jones, athlete of the USA and World hurdles, has earned the status he has achieved after years working hard and a lot of perseverance. A single mother in a family of five children, Jones had a difficult and impoverished childhood. Her mother had been constantly changing her location and she spent some time living within the basement. Jones lived a nomadic existence that forced her to change school every year up to high school. When she attended Theodore Roosevelt High School, Jones was separated from her mother in order to pursue her interests in the track and field events. Jones lived with four different families in order to keep her study focused. Jones won the Gatorade Iowa Track and Field Athlete of the Year award during her time at school. She also was a part of the orchestra at school, playing a cello player. Jones began her career in college as one the best hurdlers. She was the winner of the 100-meter hurdle in 2002 at the NCAA Track & Field Championship. She was also a part of the team that placed second in the 100-meter relay. In 2003 and 2004, Jones won the indoor hurdles competition at the NCAA Championship. Jones began her track and field career in 2005 after she completed her studies at the university. Jones won Torino Memorial in 2005, and also Ostrava and Heusden races the following year.

Brandt relocated to Auckland, New Zealand after moving from Cape Town South Africa in the latter part of her adolescence. Brandt was spotted locally by casting directors.
